Help Ubuntu reach 300 Vulnerable Children in 2006-7 with services to assist families coping with HIV/AIDS.
Learning equals a safer future for vulnerable children. The rapidly increasing number of Orphaned and Vulnerable Children (OVC) in Ubuntu's target areas is an immediate measure of the impact of HIV/AIDS in their communities. In a recent intake of a general population of schoolchildren into one of their activities, 40% were Orphaned and Vulnerable. The incidence of child-headed households is escalating, as are the number of elderly grandparents caring for orphaned grandchildren. The burden of responsibility for care giving and coping with a family member who is suffering from AIDS-related illnesses invariably falls on women, particularly girls and grandmothers. They are experiencing “repeat orphaning” - vunerable children are taken in by a close relative who then also becomes sick and dies. These children are particularly at-risk for sexual abuse and exploitation and HIV infection.
![]() | Ubuntu offers
these children and their
families counselling, access to health services, nutritional support, assistance with obtaining child support and foster care grants, school kits, learnership/bursary opportunities, after-school programs, holiday camps and support groups. Ubuntu expects to reach 300 Vulnerable Children in 2006-7 with these services for families coping with HIV/AIDS. ![]()
